Role Summary

As an Advisory Trustee for the National Society for Education, Mentoring, and Media (NSEMM), you will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of the charity. While you will not be involved in the day-to-day management, your expertise and insight will help ensure that the organisation remains aligned with its mission, meets its goals, and complies with all legal and regulatory requirements. Your role is integral to maintaining the charity’s strategic vision and governance.

In terms of time commitment, we ask for about an hour of your time each month, but you’re welcome to contribute more if you’d like! You’ll be invited to attend quarterly strategic meetings to share your input and participate in any additional meetings or consultations as needed.

  • A strong commitment to ethical behaviour, confidentiality, and impartiality.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding practices and policies in the context of working with young people.

  • Understanding of financial management within the charity sector.
  • Ability to engage with external stakeholders and represent the charity effectively.

Additional Information

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for an enhanced submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

To be considered for the position of Trustee, you must be at least 18 years old and must not be employed by the society unless specifically allowed by our governing documents. You are ineligible to act as a Trustee if you are disqualified under the Charities Act, unless this disqualification has been waived by the Charity Commission. Disqualifications include being a disqualified company director, having an unspent conviction for dishonesty or deception (such as fraud), being an undischarged bankrupt or subject to an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA), having been removed as a Trustee due to misconduct or mismanagement, or being listed on the sex offenders’ register.

Additionally, it is essential to assess any potential conflicts of interest before applying, as applications may be declined if there is a conflict of interest—such as a financial benefit to you or a connected person—or a conflict of loyalty where your duties to the charity may clash with obligations to another organisation or personal views.

At NSEMM, we are fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children and vulnerable individuals we work with. We take our safeguarding responsibilities seriously and strive to create a safe environment for everyone. All staff, volunteers, and trustees are required to uphold our safeguarding policies and procedures, act with integrity, and respond promptly to any concerns regarding potential harm or abuse. We are dedicated to preventing abuse, promoting welfare, and ensuring that children and vulnerable individuals are protected in all aspects of our work.
